Cathay Pacific and Google Collaborate on AI Research to Prevent Contrail Formation

Cathay Pacific and Google announced today a collaboration to conduct research on contrails, integrating aviation operational data with artificial intelligence (AI) technology to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the aviation industry and the impact of contrails on the climate. Cathay Pacific is Google's first commercial airline partner in the Asia-Pacific region and is also the first airline globally to trial this new technology on ultra-long-haul flights.

Formation and Impact of Contrails

Contrails are the white trails formed by aircraft flying through cold and humid layers of the atmosphere at high altitudes. While most contrails dissipate quickly, some can persist and spread into larger cloud formations, trapping heat in the atmosphere. Previous studies have indicated that persistent contrails may account for about one-third of the overall climate impact of the aviation industry, making contrails a significant area of research alongside carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions.

Goals and Methods of the Collaboration

Through this collaboration, both parties have initiated flight trials to assess the feasibility and potential limitations of measures to address contrails within Cathay Pacific's global route network. Cathay Pacific will utilize data obtained from actual flight tests to support the research on AI solutions for contrail mitigation, further deepening the industry's understanding of contrails' impacts.

Google's contrail mitigation solution combines AI predictive models, satellite imagery detection tools, and extensive meteorological data to forecast airspace where contrails are likely to form. This information can assist flight dispatchers and pilots in making more accurate judgments and avoiding areas where contrails may develop by adjusting flight altitudes.

Preliminary Results and Future Plans

So far, this collaboration has been implemented on over 100 Cathay Pacific flights, with more than 80 flights adopting routes designed to avoid contrail formation. According to Google's estimates, these flights have reduced climate impacts from contrails by approximately 40%.

Cathay Pacific's Director of Digital and Information Technology, Ronald Lam, stated that this collaboration not only reflects a shared vision for promoting sustainability but also sets a new standard for innovation leadership in the aviation industry. Both parties are currently preparing for a larger second phase trial plan to collect more operational data from Cathay Pacific's Asian and trans-Pacific routes, further advancing scientific research on contrail mitigation.
