China Mobile Hong Kong Company Limited (hereinafter referred to as "China Mobile Hong Kong" or "CMHK") recently announced that it has become the exclusive Internet of Things (IoT) service and system provider for the Hong Kong Fire Services Department's "Pilot Scheme on IoT Fire Detection System." The scheme has successfully completed its first phase of field testing and is now operational in 10 old buildings across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories.
Smart Firefighting System Achieves 100% Online and Zero False Alarms
During the testing period, the wireless smart firefighting system deployed by China Mobile Hong Kong recorded a 100% online operation rate and zero false alarms, demonstrating the stability and reliability of IoT technology in enhancing fire safety in older buildings, further promoting the development of safe governance in Hong Kong's smart city.
Addressing Fire Safety Challenges in Old Buildings
Traditional fire safety improvement projects typically require the installation of water tanks, pumps, and other facilities, with project durations extending from 1 to 2 years and costs reaching hundreds of thousands to over a million HK$. This poses a significant burden on property owners. According to data from the pilot scheme, the cost of the IoT fire detection system is only HK$200,000, which is one-third of the cost of traditional projects, and the installation time can be significantly reduced.

Field Test Performance and System Features
After a 3-month field test, CMHK's IoT central monitoring platform and front-end sensing devices recorded a 100% system online rate and zero false alarms. The system effectively reduces false alarms caused by everyday cooking through dual sensing of smoke and carbon monoxide. Furthermore, when a fire occurs, the detector can activate the alarm in about 60 seconds and quickly transmit the fire signal to the Fire Services Department.
Technology Enhancing Fire Safety Management
IoT technology not only improves the operational status monitoring of firefighting equipment but also enables early detection of faults or anomalies, shifting fire safety management from reactive responses to proactive prevention. In the future, China Mobile Hong Kong will continue to collaborate with the Fire Services Department to promote the IoT fire detection system, enhancing fire safety levels in more old buildings.
