Cloudflare Launches New Identity and Wallet Tool to Support AI-Driven Business Transactions

Cloudflare recently announced the launch of a new tool, Cloudflare Wallets, along with cloudflare.pay, aimed at providing businesses with the ability to identify the owners behind AI agents and allow these agents to make payments based on authorization. This innovation will offer stable identity recognition for AI agents deployed on the Cloudflare platform, enabling them to securely conduct online shopping within user-defined limits.

Business Challenges of AI Agents

As AI agents become an integral part of online commerce, these agents can autonomously browse websites, query APIs, and even make purchases. However, the internet was originally designed for human users, making it difficult for merchants to reliably determine whether an AI assistant is a genuine customer or a malicious program. Previous tools primarily targeted search engine crawlers and were ineffective against AI agents executing transactions on behalf of real users or businesses, placing merchants in a dilemma.

Cloudflare's Solution

Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare, stated that as business models evolve, the infrastructure of the internet must keep pace. Cloudflare's new tools will provide identity to agents and connect them to real users or organizations, thereby establishing trust and accountability mechanisms to facilitate genuine business activities.

Cloudflare Wallets and cloudflare.pay will jointly address the issues of identity verification and payment. Each Cloudflare account will receive a unique URL as a permanent ID, allowing users to authorize identities for individual agents, ensuring that the receiving party clearly understands which user or organization they represent. Cloudflare will establish an "Account Wallet" as a central balance account capable of receiving, holding, and managing stablecoin assets. Users can create "Virtual Wallets" for individual agents to purchase online resources, with customizable spending limits, designated merchant lists, and maximum transaction amounts.

Future Outlook

Reservations for Cloudflare Wallet account names are now open, and the complete wallet functionality, including fund deposits, withdrawals, and virtual wallet features, will be rolled out over the coming months.
