Cloudflare recently released its network outage report for Q2 2026, which provides a detailed analysis of the causes and impacts of network outages around the world. The report indicates that the situation changed in the second quarter following a new wave of outages and infrastructure damage caused by conflicts.
Iran Restores Internet Service
The report mentions that Iran has gradually restored internet services since May 26 after experiencing 88 days of internet shutdown. Since February 28, Iran had nearly a complete internet blackout, and current network traffic has rebounded to about 59% of pre-shutdown levels. This restoration is significant for local social and economic activities.
Network Outages During Exam Season
The report notes that network outages remain frequent during exam seasons. In Q2, Sudan and Iraq issued a total of 13 internet shutdown orders, a measure that has become common during exam periods in recent years, with Cloudflare recording related incidents for several consecutive quarters.
Impact of Conflicts and Natural Disasters
The report highlights that the AWS cloud region me-central-1 located in the UAE maintained low network traffic throughout the quarter, primarily affected by conflicts in the Middle East and drone attacks damaging physical infrastructure, which hindered customer application services.
Additionally, extreme weather events have also impacted network services. The super typhoon "Mawar" struck near Guam in April, causing the longest network outage of the season. An earthquake in Venezuela and a major blackout in Tanzania also led to several hours of severe disconnections.
Vulnerability of Infrastructure
The report further points out that cable faults and DNS errors have exposed vulnerabilities in infrastructure. In May, Germany's .de domain briefly went offline due to a DNSSEC error, while a damaged submarine cable near Saint Lucia caused the country's network traffic to plummet by about 60% compared to the previous week.
