FedEx's latest report indicates that the artificial intelligence (AI) boom is significantly driving the growth of the semiconductor and digital infrastructure supply chain in the Asia-Pacific region, further solidifying Hong Kong's position within the Greater Bay Area's technology ecosystem. According to the report, 40% of surveyed companies expect semiconductor demand in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan to see the most growth over the next three years.
Importance of the Asia-Pacific Semiconductor Ecosystem
According to research by FedEx and Frost & Sullivan, the Asia-Pacific region has become a crucial hub in the global semiconductor ecosystem, accounting for approximately 58% of the global semiconductor industry's revenue. With the increasing demand for advanced chips in areas such as AI applications, data centers, and next-generation vehicles, the efficient delivery of semiconductors and related technology products to various markets has become a key factor driving development.
The report notes that AI and high-performance computing are the fastest-growing drivers of semiconductor demand, with over 2,000 new data centers expected to be built globally between 2026 and 2035. Additionally, AI development is rapidly expanding the entire infrastructure system, including high-density servers, networking equipment, and cooling systems.
Hong Kong's Strategic Role
Hong Kong plays a vital role in this evolving ecosystem. According to data from the Hong Kong SAR government, AI-related products account for about 70% of Hong Kong's total merchandise exports. In the first half of 2026, approximately one-third of mainland China's integrated circuit exports were transshipped through Hong Kong. With its strategic geographic location and world-class air freight network, Hong Kong is well-positioned to connect regional R&D, advanced manufacturing, and business capabilities, bringing innovative results to the global market.
Leung Ming-tim, Managing Director of FedEx Hong Kong and Macau, stated that the rapid growth of AI is generating strong demand for semiconductors and other advanced components supporting data centers. FedEx will leverage its air network and specialized logistics solutions in Hong Kong to assist customers in shipping high-value, time-sensitive shipments, supporting the ongoing development of the entire ecosystem.
Shifts in Supply Chain Strategy
As geopolitical uncertainties and other external factors pose challenges to business operations, supply chain resilience is becoming a significant strategic consideration for companies. Survey results indicate that 30% of respondents believe that disruptions caused by geopolitical factors are the biggest challenge impacting business growth, prompting companies to gradually shift towards more resilient supply chain strategies.
The report provides insights into market trends regarding the development of the AI and semiconductor ecosystem in the Asia-Pacific region, helping businesses gain a deeper understanding of emerging supply chain trends and growth opportunities. For more information, please refer to the full report.
