The Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) and CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) jointly held the "Sustainable Development Seminar on Residential Electrification" on August 20, 2026, aimed at promoting residential electrification and facilitating the development of smart green communities. The seminar attracted over 200 industry professionals and featured an innovative technology exhibition area showcasing cutting-edge green technologies from ten partner companies and R&D centers of HKSTP.

Seminar Themes and Guests

The seminar was officiated by Professor Ling Ka-kin, Chairman of the Hong Kong Housing Society, who, along with Mr. Luo Jia-jin, President of CLP Power, and Mr. Wong Ping-siu, CEO of HKSTP, discussed the future development direction of residential electrification. In his speech, Professor Ling emphasized that promoting residential electrification is a crucial step towards achieving a low-carbon lifestyle and the development of smart communities, noting that with the development of the Northern Metropolis, Hong Kong will face greater electricity demand and carbon reduction challenges.

Mr. Luo Jia-jin mentioned that to achieve the carbon neutrality target by 2050, the concept of carbon reduction must be integrated into every household, and stated that CLP Power will continue to promote residential electrification to assist projects in moving towards a more efficient, intelligent, and sustainable future.

Special Presentations and Innovative Technology Exhibition

The seminar invited several experts to share insights on topics including smart and sustainable development in innovation parks, collaborative energy systems, and energy efficiency in public housing. Attendees also participated in a discussion session led by Professor Lu Zhi-hua, Director of Customer Success and Sales at CLP Power, focusing on the commercialization opportunities of green technology in the residential market.

The on-site innovative technology exhibition area showcased innovative solutions from ten partner companies and R&D centers of HKSTP, focusing on areas such as digitalization and artificial intelligence, coatings and building envelope structures, as well as low-carbon and circular materials. These technologies include artificial intelligence and energy management, radiant cooling, and vacuum insulated glass, aimed at addressing the carbon reduction needs in the residential sector.

Electricity Demand and Sustainable Development in Hong Kong

According to reports, buildings in Hong Kong account for approximately 90% of the total electricity consumption and generate over 50% of carbon emissions, with residential electricity consumption making up 32% of total building electricity use. Therefore, promoting energy-efficient design and the application of green technologies in the residential sector is crucial for Hong Kong to achieve its carbon neutrality target by 2050.

CLP Power has been actively promoting residential electrification and the development of all-electric homes, and through the "CLP Community Energy Saving Fund," has allocated HK$30 million to launch the "Energy Efficient Appliance Replacement Program," which helps low-income families replace old appliances with high-efficiency ones, assisting in reducing energy expenses and enhancing home electrical safety.

The successful hosting of this seminar marks a further deepening of collaboration between HKSTP and CLP Power in promoting the vision of green housing and injects new momentum into Hong Kong's sustainable development.
